One month in...

Well, I have been doing my running program for about a month now and it has definitely been a slow process. I am working on the walk/run program and it has been progressing but at a slower rate than I would like. I can now run for a consistent 10 minutes before having to walk (and from there it goes to about 8 minutes and then down to about 5) which I think is great. The problem is that while my lungs feel good (like I could go for miles) my legs start to ache after about two miles. I think that I really need to work on strength and stretching as well as dropping some (ok- a lot) of excess weight. While I have been doing pretty good on running 3-4 days of the week I haven't done much to change my diet. I know this will be important to my progress but have been a little hesitant doing it. Not that I am eager to hang on to bad habits, it's more that I just want to concentrate on one change at a time such as the running. At one month out though I think it just might be time to make the changes I need in order to get to the next level. I am really hoping to be able to run that two miles all the way through by the end of the month!

Sounds like you are on the right track. My advice would be to make sure you do strength training along with the running...it will keep your bones strong...I learned the hard way when I was a new runner, stress fractures are not fun! Good luck. I am excited to read about your experiences.

Diet and strength training will definitely help your running. Make a plan for the week and be strong and stick with it!! Pretty soon, you'll be an addict and can't get enough. You're doing awsome, keep trucking on!!

Stacey-
Thanks for the advice! I think you're right, now that I have gotten into regular weekly runs I can feel that I need to start working on my muscles. My lungs feel like they can go a lot longer than my legs!

Thanks Jill! Hoping I can keep with it and start adding on some miles :-)
